Camping Cousins a winning image

Updated: Jun 17, 2020

When we left Riverside, CA to go camping I only had a few goals other than relaxing with the family. I wanted to try getting a shot of the Milky Way, catch some fish, and get a Family Portrait of the all the cousins who would be together. On the first night, after setting up the tent, preparing dinner, and getting the kids in their sleeping bags I set up my tripod (which is pretty crummy) and aimed my camera at the stars. Since we were camping when there was no moon I was sure I would be able to get a shot of the Milky Way. I was not disappointed. The next day, we went fishing and my oldest daughter caught her first fish and was so excited she had to keep fishing for the rest of the trip. We went up to Rock Creek Lake and fished more. One evening, I decided to try and get the Family Portrait of the kids. They only gave me a few moments but they did give me one beautiful image. On the last day, we hiked around in Mammoth and saw Devil's Post-pile and Rainbow Falls.

When we got back from the trip, I decided to enter my image of Camping Cousins in the Inland Empire Professional Photographers and Videographers Image Competition in the Children's Category. I was so excited when the image received enough points for merit but was even more thrilled when I realized my image won Best of Class for its category. I guess it pays off to have goals and cute kids to photograph. UPDATE: I won again here
