Senior Portrait Styling

Updated: Aug 26

You are wondering what you or your daughter should wear for a Senior portrait session. Do you go with a classic look or brave a trendy style? Do you embrace your uniqueness? Ahhhh so many decisions. Well you have come to the right place - if you are looking for advice for men click here.

As a guiding principle, Senior Portrait session are a special session that really is all about the senior. The senior's unique personality and character is important and should show in the accessories, props, and location. Absolutely these photos should be meaningful to family members but they will mark a moment in the Senior's life and that should be honored.

This is a big topic! Throughout I will be linking to other posts and websites to help you find exactly what you need! It may be that you already have what you need or that you will need to purchase some new threads. You want to focus on pieces you feel great in and that bring you confidence that pieces that really represent your true self. Either brand new or well loved, wearing the right outfit will take your images from, "Nice" to "Wow!"

Plan on a Few Favorites

I think it is best to bring a few of your favorite outfits - no more than four. But here is the trick they can't

be the same outfit! Make sure they vary in color (one of my favorite Senior clients brought two white dresses to her session. They were both wonderful but...not a lot of variety). Select pieces that fit well and are flattering styles and fabrics. Pro-tip: Always try on your clothes when you are preparing for the photoshoot.

For us to really capture "your" look, it is a great idea to select a range of styles from dressy to casual with a little semiformal in between. This little detail lets us get more variety of pictures for you to choose from at you ordering session.

Location matters! Ok...this is only partially true. I have seen images take at a garden in casual jean and nice top as well as with a semi-formal dress. But would a formal dress look great in this same outdoor space? Probably not, as it will look out of place.

Take Care of What You Wear

First, make sure the your outfits are in good repair (zippers close, all the buttons work, not stains). If these need to be fixed make sure they are before the session. Second, make sure everything is free of wrinkles then keep on hangers until they are ready to be worn. Pro-tip: Have your outfits all professionally cleaned and pressed.

The Take Away

Make that you love the outfits you bring. Make sure that they fit you well and are complete from head to toe. Finally, make sure you feel confident in your clothes because it shows!
