Senior Portrait Wardrobe with Sandra

Updated: Apr 28, 2022

When I discuss a senior portrait session with a client one of the first questions we have to get out of the way is for me to understand what style of senior pictures my new friend wants. Here in Southern California - Riverside we are blessed with great weather so the options or limitless. We can certainly go very traditional with primary focus on the cap & gown and include some props that help tell your story - like what clubs and activities you were involved in and even your college revele sweatshirt or stolls

that show all of the honors you earned. This is a great style but I fear the images become dated rather quickly. We can also go in a more editorial direction which focuses more on the wardrobe you choose as well as making sure that your hair and makeup are phenomenal. To be honest we usually do a little of both. Either way if you are positive and ready to have fun we are going to make great images. But here are some tips to make both styles successful like Sandra did at her senior portrait session.

For most women, the first piece to add to your wardrobe is a dress or two. Pick one dress to wear on its own ideally something you would likely wear to a formal, like Sandra did with the green dress. You also want one dress to wear under your cap and gown outfit. The dress you wear with your gown should be shorter in length than the gown itself. This is your time to shine so don't worry about being “too dressed up!" If you don’t want to spend a ton of money adding a new piece to your personal wardrobe, try rentings like from Rent the Runway because you don’t have to spend a lot to look and feel like amazing.

But what kind of dress should I wear for editorial photos?

I recommend choosing long, flowing dresses or skirts because they flatter everyone's shape, look amazing, and bring a feeling of motion and dimension to your photos. Maxi (or floor length) skirts and dresses will give us the most to work with add more drama to your walking photos. Bonus they look especially gorgeous when contrasted with nature, like the desert, forest, fields or beach. Feel free to re-wear your prom or other formal dress! (you might as well wear that dress more than just once, right?!)

Be authentically you!

Now that we have the formal dress and under the gown dresses covered, include some pieces that are more “your style'“, like your favorite denim with a blouse or cool graphic tee and shorts. This is also where I see sun dresses like Sandra wore or the khaki skirt and blose two piece set. Of course don't forget jumpsuits and rompers. One of the best things about these dressy everyday outfits is that your posing options go way WAY up. We are not limited by the dress!

Keep this in mind.

I always suggest that you have three outfits so that we have varity in the images. You just need to remember the 3 T's - Trendy, Timeless, True to you. For trendy think about what is in right now. Have fun with accesories and colors. Timeless is where you use neutral colors that allow us to really focus on you in the images. Finally, true to you is where you show us what you love, your hobbies, your story. You just can't go wrong if you keep these in mind.
